You'll find detailed and extensive test patterns that not only help you set up your TV, but aid a trained calibrator (more on this later) in getting every last pixel of performance from your TV.

The bottom line: Disney's WOWis a fantastic disc that should be the go-to choice for all beginners looking to learn about their TV, and how to set it up.īD: $39.99, DVD: $34.99- .com/disney-wow-world-of-wonder Digital Video Essentials: HD Basicsĭigital Video Essentials: HD Basics is the latest disc from TV sage Joe Kane. The bad: The other discs here have more patterns, but the ones on the Disney disc are well-designed and offer all the basics and then some. Test patterns are good, if not extensive. More than that, it teaches more advanced subjects like deinterlacing, 24p, and more. The good: Excellent tutorials teach the basics better than any other disc. There's a similarly designed pattern to set brightness.

Also, unless you have a very small or high gain screen screen then -15 aperture sounds pretty low, but so long as it seems bright enough then again just wait for the Pro calibration.Disney went all out with its foray into the setup disc world. The Pro calibration will give you the improvement, especially wrt gamma and greyscale which you can't do without a meter. Again, brightness at 0 is probably right anyway, though you'll likely have a small amount of black crush, so 17 won't usually be visible unless you raise the black level.īottom line is that I wouldn't go chasing rainbows out of the box it's likely in the right ball park for the basic settings, unless you've got a really oddball set up, so you won't suddenly see a massive improvement in PQ. The only way you'll see those is by using HDMI enhanced/expanded (whatever it's called), but I wouldn't recommend that. Not seeing the two left hand bars is also likely to be because the HDMI setting is cutting of below 16. For HDR/4k that might be a different matter. As I said for HD/rec709 then I wouldn't bother trying to see above 235 anyway, hence my contrast is at 0. Perhaps those test patterns are showing the 'highest bars' at above 235. Going back to your figures -35 on contrast seems way too low, you won't see anything above 235 depending on the HDMI settings as it will be cut off. If I find mine I'll try to compare them to see if I can understand what your issue is. I've got a copy myself somewhere, but it's more for various other tests to do with chroma resolution and such like to determine the optimum settings for your display (ie like whether RGB or YCrCb gives a better result). Of course the white balance was totally different on each, but that's what your Pro calibration will sort later. However you'll likely find that brightness and contrast at 0 with HDMI set to 'normal' (not enhanced) will be the correct setting anyway as my last 3 JVCs have been. This is just for rec709/HD though, so things may be different wrt 4K settings.

I've been using this disc to do my initial set up for the last 5 years or more, before going on to do a full calibration with my test equipment.ĪVS HD 709 - Blu-ray & MP4 Calibration - AVS Forum | Home Theater Discussions And Reviews You then use the flashing white bars to cut off above 235 (or 255 if you really want to waste headroom). The use the 'basic patterns' part to set brightness and contrast: One has flashing black bars so you adjust the brightness so you can just see 17 flashing (probably you'll only see 18 without raising the black level though as is typical with JVCs).

I'd ditch the S&M disc and download the (FREE) AVS HD709 disc instead.
